An Apple Pie

Dear Friends

It its one of our favorite pie because it is crunchy and flavorful of apple with spices.It is famous all over the world wide. It has double pastry crust on the top and bottom with apple filling inside. Thanks to Swathi for selecting Pie theme and gayathri who suggested it :) Here is the recipe and enjoy it :)

Ingredients:

For Double dough Crust :
  • 1 3/4 cups  (260g) All purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (75g) Self-raising flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled, cut into small pieces
  • 1/3 cup (75g) Sugar
  • 1 Tbsp Milk
  • 1/4 Tsp Salt 
  • Cold water for kneading
For Filling:

  • 8 large Granny Smith apples( I had used 6 )
  • 3 Tablespoons Unsalted butter
  •  1/4 cup Sugar and 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  •  1 /2 Tsp ground cinnamon
  •  1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • A pinch of nutmeg powder

Method: Preheat the oven to 350 F or 180 C once you made the filling.

Step by step wise process picture of apple pie :


  1. Sift all the dry ingredients such as all purpose flour,self-rising flour,sugar,salt.
  2. Add cold cubed butter to it
  3. Knead to make coarse crumbs by adding milk and water
  4. Knead well  till it gets the right consistency as shown in the picture.
  5. Divide the dough into 2 halves.
  6. Wrap the 2 halves and keep it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes or till it is firm.
  7. Slice the apples lengthwise..Immediately toss the apples with lemon juice in the bowl to avoid discoloring.
  8. Take a medium sauce pan and place it on medium heat,put both sugar and butter to it and let it melt completely.
  9. Sprinkle the spices such as nutmeg.cloves and cinnamon powder on to the apples.
  10. Toss well.
  11. Once poured melted butter sugar mixture into the apple mixture bowl. Let it sit for about 10 minutes.Take a saucepan that you used for melting butter. Pour the apple infused butter melted sugar mixture on to the colander.Let it sit till it is absorbed.
  12. Take a cooled 1st dough and place it on the counter top dusted with flour.Make a circular dough by placing the 9 inch pie pan.
  13. Invert the pan on the counter top by placing the circular dough.press it firmly with your index finger and thumb all around the sides as shown in pic.
  14. Prick the holes on the dough by using fork slightly.This will help the apples to steam.
  15. Place the apple spices filling on the dough pan. You can pour the juice infused butter extract to it.
  16. Take out the 2nd dough and make a flat dough about 1 inch.
  17. Lift out the 2nd flat dough by using rolling pin and place it on the apple pie pan gently
  18. Press together top and bottom of the dough.Seal out the edges by using your index finger and thumb to make design.
  19. Take a pairing knife and cut four small air vents on the center. Apply 2 tablespoons butter or egg wash(1 egg with little water and beat gently). Sprinkle the top with sugar if you wish.
  20. Bake it for about 30 to 40 minutes or the top crust is golden in color.
  21. It is golden in color 
  22. Transfer the pan to the cooling rack.
  23. Once cooled or warm,slice it
  24. Garnish it along with your choice of whipped cream or ice cream.I had designed apple carved heart and  it is just for show apple theme design :)
  25. Here is the pic as shown while took off the 1st slice and you can see inside. Enjoy it.
